Philip Holmes-Smith has been helping schools analyse their testing data for 15 years. The Student Performance Analyser (SPA) combines that experience into an easy to use software package that makes the job of analysing your AIM/NAPLAN and/or On-Demand data very simple.
Once you download your school’s AIM/NAPLAN data and/or On-Demand data, SPA instantly identifies students who are performing one or more years below expected VELS level, at expected VELS level or one or more years above expected VELS level.
Alternatively, for NAPLAN National Scale scores, SPA can identify students who are performing one or more years below the State average, at the State average or one or more years above the State average.

In addition to analysing single-year data, you can also continue to look at five-year trends in your school’s AIM/NAPLAN results. SPA overcomes the problem caused by AIM and NAPLAN being done at different times of the year by comparing the difference between your school’s mean and the State mean at the time of testing.
Alternatively, for On-Demand data, SPA shows trends over five testing periods. Based on the dates on which the tests were done, SPA calculates an expected VELS score and compares your school mean to this expected level and plots the difference
SPA also allows you to track the growth of students between their Year 3 and Year 5 AIM/NAPLAN tests and between their Year 7 and Year 9 AIM/NAPLAN tests for the 2007-2009, 2006-2008, 2005-2007 and 2004-2006 cohorts of students.
Alternatively, for On-Demand data, SPA allows you to track the growth of students between two testing periods within a year (say mid-year and end-of-year) or between two testing periods from one year to the next (say end-of-year Yr5 to end-of-year Yr6).
For AIM/NAPLAN data, SPA can summarise the average growth of three cohorts of students. Again, SPA overcomes the problem caused by AIM and NAPLAN being done at different times of the year by comparing the difference between your school’s growth and the State growth at the time of testing.
For Reading and Numeracy NAPLAN results, SPA also helps you to diagnostically analyse student responses to each question. SPA identifies the correct answer (green) and incorrect responses that have been frequently chosen (bright red). SPA also identifies questions on which your schools has done particularly well (green) or particularly poorly (red).
Finally, improvements are always being made to SPA, many of which will be made available to you as part of your annual renewable subscription fee. For example, in the near future SPA will give you a summary of the number of students in each National Band, a summary of the number of student by A-E grades and an even more sophisticated ways of looking diagnostically at your NAPLAN results.
